After putting Leatherbag behind me in 2012, I didn't really know where to go. I pursued other musical interests including a post rock project called Doctor Club, put together some film score stuff for my friends at Dual Tape Deck, did some on the sly guitar soli, and made two ambient recordings with my good friend Dieter Geisler. That is all to say, that I shyed away from a certain kind of songwriting. I'm not sure why. I think I needed to take a step back.
When I found myself able to inch back toward the kind of songwriting that comes most natural, there was a different feeling there than there was before. It was one of peace and contentment with the writing process, rather than the end result. I wasn't even considering recording an album. I was just writing and learning to enjoy that as a fulfilling process on its own.
After about 2 years, I found myself recording again with old friends and new compadres. Seth (The Reputations) was at the helm of the ship, as he has been since I landed in Austin over 10 years ago. Brian (Western Youth), Nick (El Campo), and Dieter (On Delay) made up the rest of the core band. I brought in a few friends to guest on it as well. Taylor (Western Youth), Graham Weber and Ryan (RTB2) obliged me.
I tried some things here that I haven't before. There was a big effort for the arrangements to be communal versus one person's vision. Nothing was labored over and we were all open to ideas that were new to us. I'm stoked about it.
Thanks to Brad for putting it out and for all my friends who helped to make it happen in one way or another. The biggest realization during this time of my life has had much to do with the maintenance of love, ego death and the zen of right now.
